public health - SUBSTANCE ABUSE (zine)
2023
Topics in Graphic Design Inquiry (GD 2)
The objective of this zine is to shed light on the complex challenges presented by the intersection of homelessness and substance abuse in the Tenderloin District. This (potential coffee table) zine offers a way to share a story through careful selection of loud photos in the Tenderloin of people, homelessness, and campaign (mockups) alongside facts about the neighborhood's high rate of crime, drug dealing, and addiction. The layout addresses the history behind the Tenderloin district and how it became what it is today, stories of people who live in the Tenderloin, How treatment helps and where to start looking, and my previous campaign. The recurring theme of the contents continues to be inspired by Keith Haring - as well as the layout of the zine itself - shown through bright colors, thick, bold lines and the flowing constant (where pictures/text bleed through to the next spread). After group critic, I decided to change the 3rd and 5th spread to help my zine flow better and make it more uniform. For the 3rd spread I used the text header bleed method that I had used in the spread before and for the fifth photo I changed the photo colors from red and blue to its original color.
